Drunk Driving Law

drunk driving laws

There’s nothing wrong with moderate drinking as alcohol can be a great catalyst to have a great time. However, when one’s drunk, that person tends to do the funniest of things without inhibitions. Sadly though, when one gets intoxicated that person has the tendency to do stupid things after getting all drunk. One of those things is driving intoxicated. Alcohol can impair a person, slowing down their reaction time and making them vulnerable to ending up in accidents.

Drunken Driving Facts

Drunk driving kills tens of thousands of people annually. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 17,941 people died because of alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents in 2006 alone. This represents a staggering 40 percent of traffic deaths in the country. Also, the NHTSA reported that around 275,000 people have been injured because of a drunken driver-related accident. Furthermore, the Bureau of Justice Statistics has shared that local law enforcement agencies have made almost 1.5 million arrests all over the country because of drunk driving. These serious problems need to be prevented to stop further instances of accidents where properties are damaged, people hurt, and lives lost.

Putting Alcohol-related Crashes to a Stall

Anti-drunk driving laws are currently being implemented by the federal and state governments. Driving under the Influence (DUI) or Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) are terms that describe someone who commits the offense of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. For drunk driving, a person’s Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is measured. If one’s BAC is higher than the allowed levels he or she can get jail time and made to pay fines.

More than having a drunken driving law, government agencies and concerned groups are working together to make the DUI law work. For one, law enforcement agencies are holding checkpoints to make sure that drunk drivers are taken off the roads. Thousands are apprehended in these checks, preventing DUI or DWI accidents before they even happen.

Also, government agencies and other concerned organizations are holding campaigns that help educate people about the dangers of drunk driving. Television, print, and internet campaigns were made, helping people understand why they should stop driving after consuming alcohol. Every December, the country commemorates National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, which is where most of the campaigns to stop impaired driving are launched.

What Else Can is done?

In the past few years, the campaigns to prevent impaired driving have increased and have significantly lowered down the number of drunk driving accidents. From almost 18,000 deaths because of drunk driving in 2006, it was to 10,228 in 2010. Also, by 2010, 1.4 million drunk drivers were apprehended by the authorities, which explain the trend of decreasing fatalities because of impaired driving. Given the decrease in the number of accidents and fatalities caused by drunk driving, what else can be done to help lower down these numbers?

Better Implementation of the Law. Drunk driving accidents have significantly went down because of the improvements in the implementation of the state and federal laws. By continuously improving the implementation of these laws, more and more drunk drivers will be apprehended, making our roads safer.

Improvements in the Anti-drunk Driving Campaigns. The better, more compelling campaigns have encouraged more and more people to take a stand against drunk driving. By better educating the public about the dangers that drunk driving brings, more and more people will be able to lessen the occurrence of drunk driving.

Stay Sober. Nothing can better prevent drunk driving accidents than by staying sober. Being responsible motorists can put an end to these senseless injuries and loss of lives. If more and more people learn to say no to drinking and driving, motor vehicles can be avoided and the road can be safer for everybody.
